Young leopard’s collar drops off in Turkmenistan

leopards collar

Kaveh, a young male who was collared in early September 2015, lost his collar after one year within Turkmenistan. Left on the ground nearly two kilometers inside the border military zone, the collar sent alarm signals indicating that it had been immobile for at least a day. Needing to retrieve the collar, the Foundation began to liaise with political authorities on both sides of the frontier in order to leverage the cross-border partnership between the two countries. However, despite political willingness, visiting the military zone still presents a major challenge to the Foundation, and we continue to work closely with relevant governmental decision-makers and border guards to find a solution. While most of the data has been received via satellite, other data stored in the collar itself needs to be downloaded directly from its memory.
